There are situations when I absolutely adore living in Austin: when I’m paddleboarding on Town Lake, when I’m drinking a frozen margarita at Maudie’s, when I’m hanging out in hip East Austin beneath string lights.
That becoming explained, there are specific matters I’m significantly less fond of: the sweltering summers, the isolation, the lack of walkability.
I have lived in Austin for pretty much two yrs. Here’s what I’ve come to like and despise about it:
What I adore about Austin

The People today
By and significant, Texans are amazingly pleasant persons: generous, amusing, and sincerely kind. When I had Covid, multiple neighbors brought me tortilla soup and walked my puppy. Individuals say hi to you on the street here, even if they really do not know you. Austin is by much the friendliest position I have ever lived.

The Foodstuff
An additional good – the food items. Austin’s food scene is thriving: you can find exceptional TexMex, Thai, Vietnamese, and of course, barbecue. Some of my preferred spots are Uchiko (sushi), Odd Duck (new American), and Loro (Asian/barbecue fusion). I’ve also developed to Really like frozen margaritas, ha.

The H2o
As a born-and-lifted Michigander, I desperately need to have to stay close to drinking water (that was a single of the matters I found toughest about residing in Colorado). Luckily for us, Austin has loads of it: Town Lake, Barton Springs, and Lake Travis, to name a number of.
The Winters
The winters right here are pleasant – the temperature hovers all over 70 degrees, and the skies are typically crisp and blue. Though we do have the odd snow day, the winter season temperature is extremely moderate.

Stay Music
I’d be remiss if I did not mention Austin’s internationally renowned are living songs scene. I adore how you can walk into a random bar on a Tuesday and hear an incredible functionality for the value of a Shiner Bock.

The Puppy-friendliness
In Austin, you can deliver your puppy virtually anywhere — I bring my pup nearly almost everywhere I go. My nearby CVS is even pet dog-friendly.
What I Loathe
The Crowds
Due to its huge reputation in recent a long time, Austin feels insanely crowded at times. Parking is hard to come across, restaurants are packed, and the weekends primarily can be frantic.
The High Cost of Living
Austin is incredibly high priced. To acquire a plot of land – not even a household – in my community, charges a million dollars.
Weak Walkability
Regrettably, Austin is not a walkable city. Bisected by two highways, Austin is a quite automobile-dependent city for walkability, it ranks 42nd in the US, among Las Vegas and Pheonix. As someone who loves to walk, this is a substantial draw back.
The Allergies
Central Texas has been named the “Allergy Capital of the World.” There’s even a day by day allergy report on the community news, in which formal pollen counts for ragweed, grass, and mold are calculated. I never experienced allergies in my lifestyle till I moved listed here — ugh.
The Warmth
The summers in Austin are brutal. Temperatures can achieve 110 degrees (or better). Immediately after this year’s scorching summertime, 90 degrees bizarrely feels rather cool to me.
The Isolation
Austin is close to only a couple towns: Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Before this 12 months I designed the blunder of driving to New Orleans, which took 10 hours. At times I come to feel so envious of the East Coast – picture driving a handful of hrs and being capable to entry Boston, Philly, and NYC? Sigh.
All this to say, I’ve been quite content listed here. I’m not certain if it’s my forever house (I’m not absolutely sure I have a for good property, time period), but I program to remain at minimum a handful of extra several years. And appreciate quite a few more lake days and frozen margs.
